The Sacrament of Baptism invites us on a journey of faith as a disciple of Jesus, the Christ. It calls us to a way of life in the spirit. It is the beginning of our initiation into the Christian mystery.
Baptism is a sacrament of initiation, the Source of that New Life in Christ from which the entire Christian life springs forth. In the waters of Baptism we are freed from original sin, the power of darkness and are empowered by the Light of Christ.
In the waters of Baptism, we die to the ways of sin, we are buried and we rise again to new life as children of God.
For a child to be baptized in the Roman Catholic Church, there must be a basis for hope that the child will be raised n the Catholic faith. We also will need:
Being a godparent is a lifelong commitment and a great honor. When choosing a godparent, remember that they are entering a privileged faith relationship with the child. They promise to serve as a Christian role model by helping the child grow in the ways of the Catholic church.
One of the godparents must be a baptized, confirmed and practicing Catholic whose age is 16 or older. Only one godparent is required, however, there can be two who are the official godparents. If others are chosen, they will be "honorary" godparents. Only two godparents are listed in the baptismal book.
If a second godparent is chosen and that person is a baptized non-Catholic, they will be listed as a Christian witness. Non baptized persons cannot be sponsors for a Catholic baptism.
