Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
Are you considering becoming Catholic or are you one of many who were baptized but then never learned about your faith or received the sacraments? Are you perhaps the spouse of a Catholic and drawn to learn more about this faith? Perhaps you are of another faith or of no particular faith, yet find yourself searching.
The OCIA (formerly RCIA) is a process of discernment allowing you the freedom to explore and respond to the teachings of Christ and His Church. This process occurs over several months culminating in full reception into the Church at Easter. Registration is required.
Step 1: Inquiry
Beginning Sunday, July 14th after the 11:15 AM Mass, sessions are held at the Martha House. This is a period during which you will be introduced to the faith, embark on your own spiritual journey and ask any questions you may have.
Step 2: Catechumenate
If you feel ready to begin formal instruction, you will be accepted in the catechetical part of the program. This is a more formal instruction in the liturgy, mission and organization of the Church, as well as practice in developing your prayer life. This begins on the first Sunday of Advent (Dec. 1st, this year).
Step 3: Purification
At this time, you will meet with Father and finally commit to full reception into the Church. If you are ready to continue, you will be accepted at a Diocesan Celebration on the first Sunday of Lent (Mar. 9, 2025). This final Lenten preparation is a time for you to deepen your spiritual preparation for the Sacraments. Full initiation will occur at the Easter vigil Mass.
Step 4: Metanoia
After receiving the Sacraments, we will continue to meet with you through Pentecost. During this time, you will reflect on your experience, investigate other Church teachings such as Social Justice and the Environment. You will consider how to actively live your faith in the world and participate in parish life.
Special needs:
If you have physical or educational challenges, please contact the OCIA coordinator. We will do everything we can to accommodate your needs.
For Catholics in need of Confirmation only:
If you are a fully-formed, practicing Catholic who has never been confirmed, we are working to develop a shorter, less intense program for you. Please contact the Office or the coordinator to express your interest.
